All ports show an increase in total volume. However, only the Port of Krems could register an increase in the division water handling due to the unfavourable navigation conditions and the massive ice-formation on the Danube in the first quarter of 2006.
Vienna and Enns registered rapid growth in container transhipment. The Port of Vienna generated an overall transhipment volume of 10.8 million tons, showing an increase of 3 % over 2005. In that year, the port expanded its facilities with a few new warehouses, a new biodiesel facility and a woodchip facility. At the Port of Krems, the overall transhipment volume reached 3.5 million tons, an increase of 27 %. Water handling – about half of which generated from the transhipment of gravel – rose by 71 percent, reaching a total of 840.000 tons. The Port of Enns recorded a boost in container transport with a 2 % increase in transhipment volume, reaching 5.67 million tons. The Port of Linz brought a total performance of 9.19 Million Tons (+ 8 %) with container transhipment reaching a share of 42 Percent.
