Austria celebrates its rivers with a new release: Flüsse in Österreich – Lebensadern für Mensch, Natur und Wirtschaft, Rivers in Austria – Main arteries for people, nature, and economics

Austria’s rivers and their diversity are the focus of the newly publication by the Austrian publisher Studienverlag. Throughout this work, renowned authors are devoted to present the different facets of Austria’s rivers, whether ecosystems, recreational or economic factors. via donau expert Thomas Hartl contributed to this work with his essay „Flüsse als Transportwege“ (Rivers as transport routes) which depicts the Danube Waterway as an environment-friendly alternative for cargo transport.
Could you imagine that in the past, sturgeons which had been caught in Lower Austria were exported to France via inland navigation or that in 2007, some 13 Million tons of goods were moved on the Austrian stretch of the Danube? Did you know that the Danube used to flow into the Mediterranean?
